A mother and her two young children have died after the ambulance they were travelling in overturned on the N2 near Mthatha.
They were patients in the back of the ambulance.
Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says the accident happened on Tuesday night.
Kupelo says the three deceased, and two other patients, were being transferred from the Nelson Mandela central hospital in Mthatha to St Patrick's district hospital in Bizana when the vehicle overturned.
