Parents close another school in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro

Parents of learners at Despatch Primary School have closed the school in protest over teachers shortages.

Janine Jooste, a parent who is on a task team established last week said that the school was closed for learners last Wednesday and for teachers on Thursday.

She told Algoa FM News that they had sent letters to the Department of Education requesting the Education District Officer to come to the school to address their grievances.

Jooste said the Task Team decided that if they do not close the school now, they might have the same situation or a similar situation several months down the line.

Meanwhile, this is the second week since schools opened that parents of learners in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas are keeping their children out of school.

The parents, through school governing bodies, decided to keep their children out of school until the Education Department address a myriad of problems affecting schools, the prime issue being teachers shortages.

Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle has also established a task team to work with the Northern Areas Education Forum to resolve all outstanding issues.

Forum spokesperson, Richard Draai.

"We are busy negotiating with a task team that was formed by the Premier. Our stance is that we are on a good wicket now, because the Premier stated that he wants this issue expedited. We will get feedback tonight and hopefully we will get the parents to sent children back to school, while we are negotiating with the Premier" he said
