Home Affairs Minister, Naledi Pandor, on Monday presented hundreds of fire victims in Nelson Mandela Bay with new identity documents.
This, after they lost all their belongings in a devastating fire which destroyed hundreds of shacks in the Chris Hani informal settlement earlier this month.
Pandor, accompanied by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor, Zanxolo Wayile, presented 131 ID books and more than 100 birth certificates to the victims who are being housed in a high school in New Brighton.
The Minister told Algoa FM News that more documents still need to be processed for the remaining fire victims.
"We want to show both our sympathy to those who suffered loss during the fire but also to indicate to our people that we are a goverment commited to service."
Meanwhile, Pandor said because schools reopen on Wednesday, Wayile and his team will be fast-tracking the provision of shelter off the school premises.
The Minister said she's also grateful to the school for coming to the people's aid.
"We have been very fortunate that the school principal has co-operated with the metro in order to provide support to the community, but really we have to address the matter of shelter." said Pandor.
