Motlanthe to visit schools in EC

Deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe will be one of several high profile government officials to visit the Eastern Cape on Wednesday on the first day of the new school year.

Motlanthe will travel to Lusikisiki where he will interact with learners and school management in that area.

He will be accompanied by the deputy education minister, Enver Surty and Eastern Cape premier, Noxolo Kiviet.

Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, will in turn visit the Dlulisa senior secondary school in Butterworth which recorded a dismal 4.9 percent matric pass rate.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Transport Department says its ready to deliver improved scholar transport services to 54 000 learners when schools reopen on Wednesday.

However, department spokesperson Ncedo Kumbaca says they are still finalising a bidding process for a new service provider.

"We have decided to reappoint One Future Development 46 for the first half of this school year's scholar transport programme while we are busy with the bidding process (for a new service provider)."

"We can assure the people of the Eastern Cape that as from tomorrow morning (Wednesday), learners are going to be transported on time and safely throughout the province," he said.

"We are going to transport about 54 000 learners."
