Panayiotou bail hearing postponed

The bail hearing of PE murder accused Christopher Panayiotou has been postponed in the city's magistrate's court.

The 28-year-old is accused of orchestrating the abduction and murder of his wife Jayde.

Proceedings on Wednesday were characterised by exchanges between Magistrate Abigail Beaton, who was unhappy at not being informed about the absence of defence advocate Terry Price and stand-in counsel, Theuns Roelofse.

Beaton postponed the bail hearing on Wednesday stating that she was not comfortable with another attorney, Theuns Roelofse standing in for Christopher Panayiotou's defence  team.

State Prosecutor Marius Stander said that the state had filed 5 affidavits in total.

Stander said that one of the affidavits related to an unknown man who visited Panayiotou in prison.

He said that the unknown man was only tracked down late on Tuesday night.

Another affidavit by the state related to a request for information on Panayiotou from the Cyprus government.

Stander expressed that these were the reasons why the opposing papers were filed late.

Christopher Panayiotou also addressed the court for the first time on Wednesday.

He appeared uncertain, first saying he was uncomfortable with attorney Theuns Roelofse proceeding with his defence but then later giving him the instruction to do so.

The case was postponed until Thursday, where Advocate Terry Price will proceed with the bail hearing.

eNCA reports that Price has laid a complaint with the Chief Magistrate against Magistrate Abigail Beaton.

Price said he was not briefed to appear for Panayiotou on Wednesday and that he was 'very angry' that Beaton accused him of being unethical.
