Oxford Dictionary launches its first bilingual isiXhosa/English dictionary in East London on Thursday.
Meagan Hall, one of the compilers, says the dictionary will assist Xhosa speaking children who are learning in English at school, as well as anyone who wants to learn the language.
She says more than 35 experts in both languages, dictionary making and computer software contributed in the making of the dictionary.
Hall says over 3000 copies have already been ordered by schools and libraries.
"The development of Africa languages is extremely important and we see ourselves as participating in the standisation of isiXhosa, which is an ongoing process. It's particularly important for us to be launching this in Heritage month, when we all look to ourselves and our Heritage to preserve it to ensure its going to be around for our children." says Hall.
