More than one thousand schools across the Eastern Cape have been gazetted for closure as part of the rationalisation, realignment and merger of non-viable schools.
Provincial Education Department spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima says the school closure follows a series of meetings with parents, unions, school governing bodies and civil society leaders.
Mtima says the gazette was promulgated on the fifth of this month and gave communities a 30 day period to submit comments in relation to the list.
He stressed that comments are invited from the public and that they must be submitted to the district directors for the attention of the provincial office.
Mtima added that the program is meant to ensure the optimisation of limited State resources for the benefit of every learner in the province.
