Oudtshoorn court convicts man for raping schoolgirls


A man in his early fifties was found guilty in the Oudtshoorn Regional Court on Friday on several charges including that of rape and sexual assault.

The accused, Donald Smit, was arrested in Mossel Bay in 2012 after he repeatedly raped two 12-year-old girls that he met at church.

The incidents, which mostly took place in his car, occurred over a period of several months.

Both victims attended school in Mossel Bay.

Smit was found guilty on two charges of rape, two charges of sexual assault, two charges of sexual exploitation and one charge of statutory rape.

He remains in custody and will be sentenced on the 28th of August.
