Eastern Cape police say Operation Fiela is making serious in-roads in the fight against crime.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, says six people were arrested in Flagstaff in the latest crackdown while seven firearms were seized.
She says police also confiscated 198 rounds of ammunition and 94 empty cartridges during the arrests.
The latest successes come on the back of the arrest of a suspect who was found in possession of a high caliber firearm during Operation Fiela in Lusikisiki and Flagstaff last month.
Mills says the firearm was tested and positively linked to shooting incidents that were committed in the area three weeks earlier.
Meanwhile: The Lawyers for Human Rights organisation says it will seek a court order in the North Gauteng High Court on Tuesday, declaring government’s Operation Fiela unlawful and unconstitutional.
It claims that Operation Fiela is being carried out without compliance with the law and without search warrants and that foreign nationals are being targeted during the night.
The LHR said it was gravely concerned that operations that were conducted violated section 14 of the Constitution, which guaranteed the right to privacy and not to have one’s home searched unless it was authorised and done in accordance with legislation.
The police and the ruling ANC have in turn defended Operation Fiela and said it was meant to eliminate criminal activities and was not a form of harassment.
