Eastern Cape Social Development MEC, Pemmy Majodina, says a long period of lobbying has ensured that one of the country's worst serial killers goes on trial in Butterworth on Monday.
Thirty-nine-year-old Bulelani Mabhayi faces 37 charges, 23 of which are murder charges.
These relate to a reign of terror in the Tholeni Village near Butterworth over several years in which women and children were brutally raped and murdered.
Majodina, who was part of a large group of people who gathered at the Butterworth Court this morning, says she's been working with the victims families for more than a year.
"From the 1st of August I have been attending these court cases and this one I called for no bail. Secondly I said there was no way we could take 23 families to the High court in Grahamstown or to Mthatha High Court , because these families are poor and they will be unable to attend, and indeed this was adhered to when I met with Minister Radebe" Majodina said.
