Buffalo City Municipality firefighters were called to put out a blaze in a building in Cambridge Street in the CBD that used to house the Daily Dispatch newspaper for many decades.
Municipality spokesperson, Samnkelo Ngwenya, said firefighters were on the scene in minutes with three fire tenders and 12 firemen.
“We have managed to put out the fire in just under an hour,” he said.
Ngwenya said there were no casualties as the building was not occupied.
“We suspect that there could have been people who gained entry leading to the fire, but at this stage, the cause of the fire is still unknown,” he said.
Ngwenya said the bulk of the damage was caused to the top area of the building where the fire started, leading to the roof collapsing.
“Most of the top part has been destroyed,” he said.
