Oiled Cape Gannets rescued on Bird Island again

SANCCOB

The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) has expressed its concern after over 100 Cape gannets were found on Bird Island covered in suspected fish oil.

A spokesperson for SANCCOB Monica Stassen says a ranger first spotted about 20 gannets on Sunday and together with rangers from SANParks more were found.

She says according to their field assessment at least half of the gannets, the most compromised had to be rescued.

Stassen says they were either underweight or heavily oiled.

She says the rescued gannets are being stabilised, washed and re-habilitated in Gqeberha while their Cape Town branch is on standby.

Third Incident

SANCOBB says they have reported the incident to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and all relevant authorities but are concerned that this is the third incident to be reported from Bird Island.

The suspected fish oil affecting Cape gannets on Bird Island has not been reported at any other colony.

Stassen says while the oil is not toxic to seabirds, it disrupts feather microstructure, removing waterproofing qualities. Cold water then penetrates the skin and the birds cannot regulate their body temperature.

The first incidents occurred in January 2023, and 2024.

Cape gannets are endemic to South Africa and Namibia and found only in six colonies worldwide.

SANCCOB in Gqeberha asked volunteers to come forward and donate old towels and newspapers.
