A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to two life terms for killing his mother and sister whom he believed had bewitched him.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Elias Mkhize, was jailed in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday.
NPA spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said the gruesome killings took place last December in the area of Mid-Illovo in KZN.
“Prior to the incidents, Mkhize suspected his mother and sister of bewitching him and he decided to kill them.
“On 20 December 2023, he armed himself with his unlicensed firearm and proceeded to their home which was a short distance away.
“He shot them both and then used a bush knife to decapitate them. He disposed of their heads in a nearby pit toilet. He was arrested a few hours later,” she said.
Ramkisson-Kara said he was given a 10-year jail term for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
She said the NPA welcomed the successful finalisation of this matter.
