An apparent municipal demarcation dispute has led to a community protest in the Mbizana area where protesters dug a deep trench across the R394 heading towards Kokstad on Wednesday.
Provincial Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said they condemn the protest and damage to the road infrastructure.
He said the fact that people would 'literally go and dig a trench in the middle of the road', is completely unacceptable and condemned in the strongest terms.
Binqose said the rocks were placed near the Govale Secondary Primary School in the Phepheni area where protesters proceeded along the R394.
He says motorists are advised to use an alternative route as it is currently inaccessible.
The situation has been described as very serious and violent.
Officials are already in the process of clearing the road.
