The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) says their concerns over non-compliant liquor outlets and public drinking in Alice has led to a blitz operation over the weekend in which 54 people were arrested for flouting Alert Level 1 lockdown regulations.
The spokesperson for ECLB Mgwebi Msiya says several Fort Hare students were also arrested for being out on the streets during curfew time and were each fined R500.
He says the operation was in partnership with the South African Police to enforce responsible liquor trading as the Easter Weekend looms.
Msiya says two liquor traders were also arrested in town for selling alcohol without a valid license while a 31-year-old motorist was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
