A decision will be taken within the next two days regarding further supportive treatment to two rhinos who survived being dehorned by poachers at Schotia Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape.
Dr Williams Fowlds of Investec Rhino Lifeline says the pair, Bonnie and Clyde, are still visibly distressed after receiving a large dosage of rhino anaesthetic and left for dead after their horns were removed last week.
He says its suspected that the rhinos had been under sedation for between 12 and 36 hours before they were found.
Fowlds says its a miracle that they are still alive.
He says the initial laboratory results indicate that measurements of muscle trauma are in excess of 700 percent higher than the normal range and it could be weeks before the fate of the rhinos is known.
