An off duty Uitenhage policeman has been brutally assaulted by assailants who stole his cellphone.
Police spokesperson, warrant officer Gerda Swart, says the 31 year old constable was walking in Mqolomba Street in Kwanobuhle on Tuesday night when a car stopped next to him.
She says the occupants jumped out and began assaulting the policeman, stabbing him several times, before fleeing with his cellphone.
Swart says the policeman is in a stable condition in hospital after sustaining stab wounds to the face, neck, hands and legs.
She's appealed to anyone with information on the incident to contact the nearest police station.
