A manhunt is underway for the gunmen who shot and wounded an-off duty policeman in Walmer Township in Gqeberha.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said 46-year-old Sergeant Lungisile Rasmeni was shot on Wednesday night, shortly after knocking off duty.
He said Rasmeni was opening the gate to his home in Walmer Township when he was accosted by three men who shot him in the back and robbed him of his cell phone and service pistol.
The National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla Sitole, has ordered an immediate mobilisation of the 72-hour activation plan to search for the suspects.
"Sergeant Rasmeni, who is attached to Humewood Port of Entry was rushed to hospital where he is reported to be in a critical condition," he said.
He said cases of "attempted murder and robbery with a firearm" have been opened for investigation and a manhunt for the suspects is underway.
