An off-duty Gqeberha policeman played an integral role in securing the arrest of four vehicle theft suspects and the recovery of a stolen vehicle and other property.
According to a statement, Constable Ramano Naidu was at an Action Centre in Willow Road in Fairview on Tuesday night, when he noticed a commotion outside and was informed that a bakkie had been stolen from the premises.
SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the vehicle was not fitted with a tracker however the owner’s cell phone was in the bakkie.
She said the policeman alerted his colleagues from the K9 unit and was able to inform them about the “movements of the cell phone.”
K9 members, Warrant Officer Shaun Dicks and Sergeant Nico Carelson spotted the vehicle in Njoli Street in Kwazakele, and the occupants jumped out and fled in another vehicle which they were able to pull over.
"Four suspects aged between 31 and 40 years old were arrested and detained on a charge of theft of a motor vehicle,” Naidu said.
“All the property that was in the bakkie was recovered. A CZ pistol with 39 rounds, belonging to one of the suspects was also seized.”
