SAPS

An off duty police officer was praised for his dedication and commitment over the weekend when he reacted to a tip-off about stolen guns that will be transported from Gqeberha to Komani on Easter Monday.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the Warrant Officer followed up on the information shortly after midnight and noticed the suspect emerging from his house in Maseleni Street in New Brighton, with two bags in hand.

She says the officer called for backup but confronted to suspect who started running with the officer in hot pursuit.

Colonel Naidu says the suspect started firing shots in the direction of the officer who managed to escape the bullets through a narrow gap between houses.

The suspect dropped his gun and bags and fled on foot.

The officer recovered a pump-action shotgun which was stolen in Kageba Park in July 2017, a 303 long rifle stolen in Algoa Park in 2019 as well as a magazine with five rounds, an empty R1 rifle magazine and 62 rounds of ammunition from various calibres.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and an inquiry in respect of the recovered firearms and ammunition.

No arrest has been made.
