A number of objections have been submitted to an application by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University for a rezoning that will pave the way for a taxi rank.
A report to the Human Settlements Committee, which meets next week, says the intention is for the rank to be built as a one-way operation with an entrance on Gomery road and an exit on University Way.
The report states that the rank will provide 35 loading bays in six destination lanes.
In its response to the objections, the University states that the intersection of University Way and Gomery is an ideal position for the facility, given that it is the intersection point of two prominent and highly mobile urban collector routes.
NMMU states that the facility will provide a service to students and the general public alike, given that all commuters may use the public transport facility.
Summarising the objections, Human Settlements says the proposed development would lead to the devaluation of all immovable properties in the Summerstrand area and endanger the lives of residents.
