Numsa:'Not a political organisation'

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa says its not a political organisation and that the demands related to the strike at the Ngqura Container terminal in Port Elizabeth are not political ones.

Numsa members have been on strike for more than six weeks over transport allowances, working hours and the use of labour brokers.

Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, Numsa national treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo scoffed at suggestions that the Union was using Transnet to test it's capabilities as a political player.

"Numsa is not a political organisation, these genuine demands are not political demands. For example Numsa in its congress in 2012, we have taken a decision that in all our sectors we will fight for a total band of labour brokers." says Maqungo

Meanwhile, a 35-year old Transnet employee will appear in the Motherwell magistrates court on Friday on a charge of possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Police Captain Andre Beetge says the complainant is a Transnet employee who alleges that the suspect and other people in a bakkie came to his house on Tuesday to beat him up.

Beetge says at this stage, they cannot say whether or not the incident is strike related.
