Numsa National Treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo says the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Executive Mayor Ben Fihla are like parasites taking away workers wages in the metro.
Maqungo was addressing over a thousand members outside PE City Hall on Tuesday as part of the Union's activations on day one of an indefinite nationwide strike in the metal and engineering sectors.
In a hard-hitting statement, Maqungo equated the Metro's application to increase electricity tariffs to sucking the the blood from workers.
"We are here to deliver a memorandum to the employer. We will make sure we will intensify the strike until our demands are met. We are demanding a double wage increase, a total band of labour brokers and a housing subsidy." says Maqungo
Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, CEO Kevin Hustler, says they are concerned about the impact the latest Numsa strike could have on the Eastern Cape.
"A large number of the steel and engineering industry federations of South African member companies are based in the Eastern Cape, so we are anticipating the impact could be high, although we have not heard of any direct impacts except members who have marched on City Hall."
