The NSRI is appealing to bathers, surfers and paddlers to be cautious on the Jeffrey's Bay coastline after a whale carcass washed ashore at Kabeljous near to Jeffrey's Bay.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the carcass appears to be that of a Southern Right Whale.
He says members of the public are advised to practice caution along the entire stretch of coastline between Tsitsikamma and Port Elizabeth as whale carcasses usually attract increased shark activity.
Lambinon said no increased shark activity had been witnessed at this stage, but that it was bound to happen in the foreseeable future due to the presence of this whale carcass.
