A swimmer from the NSRI rescued a dog who got trapped on rocks in Gordon's Bay earlier on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says they received a call from an eye-witness about a dog that was trapped on a rock about 30 meters off-shore at Harmony Park resort between Strand and Gordon's Bay.
He says the dog probably got stuck on the rocks due to the incoming tide.
The animal appeared to be too afraid to jump in the water to swim to shore.
Lambinon says they were told that a local man tried to reach the dog but it became aggressive and he retreated.
Rescue swimmer Kyle Burns kitted up and with a towel, approached the rock from the seaside.
The plan was for Kyle to be on the seaside to usher the dog towards the shore rather than having him swim further out to sea.
Lambinon says the dog started barking at Kyle who climbed on the rocks to sit with him.
Kyle offered him some comforting words before explaining to him what needed to happen for him to be safe.
Lambinon says the dog responded to Kyle's calm approach.
Kyle placed a towel over the animal who showed no resistance, before picking him up and carrying it to land.
Lambinon says the animal seemed to latch on to Kyle who expressed an interest in adopting the dog if his owners do not come forward.
The dog is currently with animal welfare in Cape Town.
