The NSRI at St Francis Bay is currently the only link to the outside world for hundreds of residents stranded at the town.
The Sand River Bridge washed away in heavy flooding at the weekend, cutting off road access to St Francis Bay.
NSRI Staion commander Mark Mey says from early on Monday morning, they started ferrying people on their rescue craft Spirit of St Francis from the Cove to below the main Bridge on the Kromme River.
"We are taking mostly women, children and the sick. There have been people needing medical attention through the night and day who needed to get to a PE hospital. This morning we had to ferry children who are writing their matric exams"
Mey is also alerting people on the Kromme River and in the canals at St Francis to the fact that excess water is about to be released from the Mpofu dam up-river. This will result in a high tide.
