The National Sea Rescue Institute’s pink rescue buoy was used to help five men who got caught in a rip current while trying to help two other bathers who were also in difficulty.
The NSRI said the drama unfolded on Sunday at the beach break between Magna Tubes and Boneyards in Jeffreys Bay.
Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the grandmother of a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, raised the alarm when the two got into trouble.
“Five young men went to their aid and an NSRI Pink Rescue Buoy, stationed at that beach, was thrown to the men,” he said.
However, Lambinon said the five also got caught in rip currents and the Pink Rescue Buoy was used “between these good Samaritans for their own safety and they all got safely to shore”.
In the meantime, another beachgoer used a kayak to reach the two teenagers and bring them ashore safely.
“The NSRI commend the good Samaritans for helping,” he said.
