The National Prosecuting Authority has welcomed Monday's guilty verdict and sentencing in the PE High Court of a man who infected a girl that he raped with HIV.
The 38 year old man pleaded guilty and admitted that he new he was infected with the virus when he repeatedly raped his young victim.
He was found guilty of rape and attempted murder and sentenced to 60 years on three charges that will run concurrently.
He will only serve 20 years of his sentence.
Its the first time in the Eastern Cape that a suspect is found guilty of attempted murder for knowingly infecting his victim with the HIV virus.
NPA spokesperson Tshepo Ndwalaza.
"We believe that these kinds of sentences are going to educate the public and wider community on how the court system works. We believe that it is going to send a strong message to those who do these kinds of crimes," he said.
