Not a Penny offered for Sparrow's thoughts

The Democratic Alliance says its laid criminal charges against real estate agent and party member Penny Sparrow for racial slurs made online.

Sparrow – formerly employed as an agent for Jawitz Properties in KwaZulu-Natal and a card-holding member of the DA – yesterday referred to black South Africans as monkeys who, if allowed loose, would cause huge dirt and troubles and discomfort to others.

The charge against Sparrow for investigation of Crimen Injuria was laid with the police in Gauteng by DA member and Black Like Me founder Herman Mashaba.

DA KZN leader Zwakele Mncwango told AlgoaFM News that the Party in the province had also served notice of intention to suspend Sparrow’s membership, referring her to the the party’s Federal Legal Commission for investigation.

Following the uproar on social media, Sparrow has apologised for her comments.

Her former employer Jawitz Properties noted that Sparrow’s tenure with the company had ended in November 2015 but that it would take whatever action necessary to ensure Sparrow was held responsible as the company's name and reputation had been damaged by her actions.

The company will be taking legal action.
