A report to be submitted to the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services later this week states that structures along Kings Beach walkways and Hobie Pier in Port Elizabeth are not being maintained due to a lack of funds.
The report points out that at Hobie Pier some 99% of lights are out of order and balustrades are eroded.
It says there is a commitment from the Electricity and Energy Directorate to carry out repairs on the pier lights, adding that the structural upgrade of the Humewood promenade is now underway.
With regard to planning and maintenance at Blue Flag beaches, the report states that controlled audits are conducted by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa and Beaches, Resorts and Events Management are informed about any irregularities.
The municipality has submitted applications for Humewood and Kings beaches to have full Blue Flag status and Hobie Beach pilot status for the 2014/15 season.
The certification ceremony at which the Blue Flag status awards will be announced is expected to take place in September.
