July 22 (ANA) – No arrests have been made following a shooting on the R61 road near the Corona Taxi Rank, in Mthatha, that resulted in the death of three people and that left 15 other people injured, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.
"No arrests have been made but with the resources put in place, we will make sure that we find the perpetrators in no time," Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela told African News Agency.
He said police were investigating the shooting incident that happened on Thursday.
The shootouts were allegedly instigated by some taxi associations, fighting for a route between Mthatha and Libode.
Government and political parties have come out on Friday to condemn the shooting.
"As government we wish to express our disgust at this barbaric act, we condemn the senseless act of violence meted against those in the taxi industry which has affected commuters and the community at large," Deputy Minister of Communications Stella Ndabeni Abrahams said.
African National Congress Provincial Secretary Lubabalo Mabuye called upon the law enforcement agencies to do everything in their power and leave no stone unturned until perpetrators were bought to book.
"We want to convey our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. This is so unfortunate; it is not supposed to be like this, it must be stopped immediately," Mabuye said.
