Trial date set for former presenter charged with sexual assault

A trial date has been set for a former Port Elizabeth community radio presenter who is facing charges of sexual assault.

The 36-year-old man was arrested almost a year ago for allegedly making threatening and harassing phone calls to a 24-year-old university student. The state alleges that the former presenter had threatened to sexually assault and rape her.

This is believed to be first case of this nature to be tried in the Eastern Cape. The accused, who is being represented by well-known attorney, William Booth, has been charged under Section 5 (2) of the Sexual Offences Act.

Although the trial date has been set for the 13th of December, it is believed that the defence will continue to petition the Director of Public Prosecutions to stop the case from going to trial.

The suspect, who is out on R2000 bail, may not be named until he has pleaded to the charges.
