NMU student makes first appearance in court for brutal murder on George campus

A student who is being accused of murdering a 20-year-old woman on the Nelson Mandela University (NMU)'s George campus, made his first appearance in the local Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Twenty-two-year-old Luyanda Mahlanza is accused of brutally killing his girlfriend and fellow student in her room on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says the victim sustained multiple stab wounds to her upper body.

He says Mahlanza was arrested on campus and had to be escorted by police after violence erupted on campus.

Fellow students allegedly became violent and threatened the suspect with sticks and bricks in hand.

Police had to use stun grenades to disperse the angry students.

The name of the victim has not yet been released as her parents must still identify her body.

Mahlanza indicated in court that he wanted to apply for bail and the matter was postponed to the 5th of July.

NMU, in particular the George Campus, extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

They also appealed for calm and to allow the investigation to run its course.
