A student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has confirmed that she was hit by a rubber bullet, when police attempted to disperse protesters on Wednesday morning.
NMMU students were protesting in solidarity with students on other campuses country wide who began protests earlier this week against proposed fee hikes for 2016.
Noxolo Koko told Algoa Fm News that a group of students were sitting in University way, singing revolutionary songs, when police used teargas and fired rubber bullets, hitting her in the left thigh.
"We were actually sitting and singing our own revolutionary songs when they threw teargas and started shooting. Most of us were trying to stand up and run and I was shot in that process, I know a couple of people that were shot but no one was seriously injured," she said.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan Rheeder earlier said police acted against the students this morning by using stun grenades and teargas.
