Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University said its multi-layered academic completion strategy to help its students complete the 2016 academic year was underway.
In a statement on its website, NMMU said it had no choice but to initiate a recovery plan to meet its obligations of helping all students complete this year's studies.
"After four weeks of shutdown and two weeks of intermittent interruptions, along with the unsuccessful court-mandated mediation process, NMMU had no option but to initiate an academic recovery plan to meet its obligation of helping all students complete this yearâs studies," NMMU said.
NMMU said its Executive Committee of Senate considered various proposals for completing the 2016 academic year.
"Among others, ECS decided that for Semester two examinations, students are: encouraged to sit for examinations in the November-December examination period; advised that they could nonetheless choose to write some/all their examinations in the January-February 2017 period; Informed that some practical/applied assessment tasks/activities and examinations are being deferred until January-February 2017."
"New assessment and exam dates will be shared once logistics around completing outstanding academic work and securing venues has been finalised," said NMMU.
Meanwhile, this week Rhodes University gave students two options to write exams, in the October to November window alternatively in January and February.
Students needed to notify the university by noon yesterday which option they choose.
Those students in residence who opt to write in the new year would be required to vacate their residence and only return two days prior to their exams.
Rhodes said every attempt was being made to ensure the safety and security of students and staff over the examination period as well as to ensure that exams proceed without disruption so that students who choose to are able to complete their academic year.
The Institution said "it has employed additional highly trained security personnel over the examination period."
