Port Elizabeth police have confirmed that cases of assault, intimidation and discharging of a fire-arm in a municipal building are under investigation.
This followed an afternoon of drama and chaos at a Council meeting Thursday when an ANC councillor allegedly hit a DA councillor with a glass jug, a woman reportedly fainted and a security official firing a shot.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said that âthe charges were opened this afternoon (Thurs) after the SAPS were called to the Woolboard Chambers in Military Road, Port Elizabeth where a council meeting turned into a frenzy.â
âA 45 year old councillor was injured and three other staff members sustained minor injuries. The councillor was taken to hospital for treatment,â Janse Van Rensburg said.
âIt is further alleged that a security guard fired a shot in an attempt to diffuse the scuffle. No one was injured by the shooting,â she added.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the DAâs federal council, James Selfe, said âa campaign today from the ANC in the council meetings of Nelson Mandela Bay, Johannesburg and Tshwane, to disrupt the business of the day, has undermined democracy and exposed the ANCâs true colours as a party of lawlessness.â
âThe ANC cannot accept its electoral defeat at the hands of the DA in the major Metros, and has nothing left to offer but chaos and disorder. The conduct of the ANC today was a disgrace,â Selfe said.
The ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay will address a media briefing Friday.
