NMBM: Striking municipal staff back at work

Samwu members on strike on 11 February 2021

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro

Municipal workers in the Nelson Mandela Bay have returned to work on Monday morning, following week-long strike action.

Members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) took to the streets last week, demanding additional payment for scarce skills and a Covid-19 danger allowance.

SAMWU Regional Secretory, Melikhaya Kortjan says the strike has been suspended after the Labour Court granted the municipality an interim court order.

Kortjan says their members will comply with the order and file their responding affidavits on Wednesday.

He says the parties will be back in court on 26 February but for now, they have agreed to go back to the negotiating table.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Bay's Executive Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga has welcomed the court order.

He says water and electricity supply was sabotaged during the protest.

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, Bhanga says the suspension of the strike will allow the municipality to deliver crucial services to the community.
