NMBM reports fours shootings in Northern Areas via 'shot-spotter'

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality reported four shooting incidents in the city's Northern Areas, picked up by 'shot-spotter technology' installed in secret locations across the Metro.

Metro police chief Yolanda Faro said two of the incidents, reported from the 23 December, resulted in two fatalities, while two other people were wounded in separate incidents.

She said a fatal shooting occurred on 28 December in Deverell Street in Helenvale where a man was shot in the neck and later died in hospital.

Faro said on New Year's Day a Metro Police Patrol found the body of a 19-year-old man in Pienaar Street with a gunshot wound to the head.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality introduced the 'shot spotter technology' last year in areas affected by gang violence.

Piloted in the City of Cape Town, the gunshot detection technology immediately notifies nearby law enforcement each time a firearm is discharged, dispatching police to the exact location of the gunshot.

Meanwhile, Faro said no other major incidents were reported to Metro Safety and Security Personnel over the New Year's long weekend.

Faro said this was due to a proactive plan that was already in place and this would remain in place after businesses, factories and schools reopen in mid-January.
