NMBM: Promises and warnings from Councillor Bobani

Nelson Mandela Bay residents could be in for tougher water restrictions as the Metro's supply dams continue to dwindle.

As of Thursday, the four main supply dams were at 17.35% of combined capacity, with the largest of the dams, Kouga at 6.93%.

The announcement of further restrictions on high users was made on Thursday morning by the newly appointed mayoral committee member for Infrastructure, Electricity and Engineering, Mongameli Bobani.

Bobani said residents will be compelled to use 50 litres per person per day.

He says all domestic customers will have a flow meter restrictor installed to lower the water pressure and reduce losses.

Bobani added excessive water users will be restricted to 15 kilolitres per month while industrial, commercial and institutions will need to reduce their consumption by at least 20%.

Turning his attention to the Metro's power supply, Bobani said the city would emphasize renewable energy supply.

He says that the Metro wants to be a viable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective electricity supply to consumers.

The UDM councillor and former mayor says took over from controversial ANC councillor, Andile Lungisa.

Meanwhile, Bobani has promised that under his watch, service delivery will be accelerated to Bay residents, as Infrastructure, Electricity and Engineering is responsible for basic service delivery in the Metro.

He says several initiatives/campaigns will be launched to achieve these goals.

-12 interns have been employed to improve Call Centre responsiveness to queries.
-A water conservation campaign will be launched within the community to reduce water consumption.
-The Municipal fleet will be beefed up in order to improve the turnaround time to attend to water leakages.
-Free Wifi Initiatives will be revived
-Waste to Energy project in Metro will be revived
-Metro will continue with the task of providing electricity to informal settlements in order to curb losses from illegal connections.
-Smart meters and street lights will be installed
-The gas turbine plant will be revived to curb load-shedding in Metro
-Ongoing efforts to eradicate the bucket system and improve sanitation infrastructure in informal settlements
