NMBM issue statement on ongoing strike by Librarians and Traffic

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality strike update

We are very concerned that the strike action by the Librarians and the Administrative staff at Traffic and Licensing Centres is still inconveniencing the public and we are doing everything in our power to work towards a speedy resolution. After several attempts by the municipality to have a council meeting to discuss and adopt decisions concerning the demands of our employees, could not continue as a result of opposition parties not prioritizing these meetings, our Mayoral Committee will discuss this matter at length tomorrow (11 September) to determine a way forward.

In the meantime the public can rest assured that no library fines will be accrued during the strike period and contingency plans are in place for those who require services from our traffic department. Consumers who paid upfront for driver's and learner's license tests - that expired during this period - will be contacted by the Traffic Department once the strike is over to arrange new dates convenient for them. In the case of drivers licences that either are about to expire or expired, we have no choice but to advise consumers to go to neighbouring towns like Kirkwood, Alexandria, Port Alfred, Jeffrey's Bay and Humansdorp amongst others to renew their licences.

New developments will be announced as soon as it becomes available.
