The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has less than 20% of water available from its four main supply dams.
According to figures released by the Municipality on Wednesday morning, the total combined capacity of the Kouga, Impofu, Churchill and Groendal dams is now at just 19.96%.
The Kouga is at a mere 9.4%, the Churchill at 61.6%, the Impofu at 16.45% and the Groendal dam at 33.5%.
Mayoral Committee Member for Infrastructure and Engineering Andile Lungisa told AlgoaFM News, however, that the Metro does not have a shortage of water.
He said the municipality was making use of other sources to augment its water supply, namely the Nooitgedacht water scheme which supplies the city with 170 megalitres a day.
Currently, Nelson Mandela Bay residents are using in the region of 300 megalitres a day, which is way above the ideal level of 250 megalitres of water a day.
Councillor Lungisa said the Municipality was mindful that dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic required the regular washing of hands which was why water tankers had been placed in several communities.
He nevertheless, appealed to residents to continue using water sparingly.
