NMBM get little flood relief

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has been allocated R6.7 million in emergency relief funds by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Af-fairs following last year¡'s floods.

In a letter to former Acting Municipal Manager Themba Hani at the end of last year, the department states that the purpose of the funds is to repair water pumps, sewerage pumps and provide temporary access roads and bridges.

The letter forms part of a report to the Safety and Security Committee on emer-gency relief funding.

The Metro had sought R159.1 million in emergency relief.

The department says the projects that have been approved are:
*Repairs to the collapsed section of road in Allister Miller Drive - R1.2 million
*Repairs to the collapsed section of Chelmsford Road - R2 million.
*Repairs to the Third Avenue Bridge - R2 million.
*Main supply pipe at Brak River, Kwanobuhle - R645 000
*Repairs to the sewer to storm water ingress - R375 000, and
*Repairs to pump station - R510 000.

The Department stresses that the grant is allocated ¡§solely for the purpose of responding to the immediate needs of the disaster that has occurred and with the aim of alleviating its immediate consequences¨.

Acting Executive Director for Safety and Security Shane Brown says in his report to the committee that the National Management Disaster Centre is in the process of appointing a service provider for a damage verification process.

He says the aim of this is "to determine medium to long-term projects in terms of Reconstruction and Rehabilitation grant funding".

The report shows that a total of R43.6 million was allocated to municipalities in the Eastern Cape by the National Man-agement Disaster Centre following the November floods, R30.8 million of this go-ing to Ndlambe, R3 million to Kouga and R2.8 million to Makana.
