Nelson Mandela Bay and the Cacadu District Municipality have been formally declared disaster areas following last month’s floods.
Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet published the announcement in an Extraordinary Provincial Gazette, paving the way for affected municipalities to apply for disaster relief funding.
It is estimated that damage caused in the Metro could be as high as R600m while the bill for local authorities in the Cacadu District is between R300 and R400m.
One of the worst hit areas was Port Alfred in the Ndlambe Municipality where there was major damage to roads and provincial and municipal infrastructure and Makana where most of the damage was to the road network.
The damage has been put at approximately R1b, specifically to roads and bridges as well as infra-structure such as storm water systems.
