The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has applied for Humewood and Kings Beach to have full Blue Flag status, and for Hobie Beach to enter into the pilot phase.
That's according to a report to be submitted to the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services Committee, which meets on Thursday.
The awarding of Blue Flag status will take place later this month.
Currently only Humewood holds Blue Flag status, but the municipality wants to add Kings Beach.
Criteria for the awarding of Blue Flag status are sound environmental management, environmental education initiatives, safety and security for users and water quality.
Meanwhile, R450 000 has been allocated for maintenance at Kings and Hobie beaches.
The report states that structures along Kings Beach walkways and Hobie Pier are not maintained due to a lack of funds.
At Hobie Pier, 99% of the lights are out of order and the balustrades are eroded,.
According to the report, Electricity and Energy committed to carry out repairs on the pier.
In addition, the Humewood Promenade structural upgrade is still outstanding, and this poses a safety hazard to the general public.
