The Nelson Mandela Bay Council will be asked to approve the R11.7 million budget for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament next year when it meets on Thursday.
The Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services Committee has already approved the expenditure for which no provision exists in the 2012/13 Budget.
The Metro will host six group games, a quarter-final and possibly a semi-final match.
The Eastern Cape Government has committed R17 million for the tournament and National Government has agreed to provide for public liability insurance and training and supply of kit for volunteers.
A report to Council states that it is expected that the tournament will add R152 million to GDP excluding the multiplier effects.
Further, it is expected that approximately R30 million will flow to low income households.
The entertainment industry and especially local artists will benefit by about R3 mil-lion.
If Council gives the go-ahead, Acting Municipal Manager Themba Hani will be able to enter into an agreement with the Provincial Government for the secondment of staff for the Afcon Project Office and all other aspects relating to the hosting of the event.
Further, Hani will sign agreements with SAFA and Stadium Operator.
