NMB to be declared disaster area

The process to have Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality declared a disaster area has been set in motion.

At a media briefing on Wednesday, Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said that the municipality has signed a disaster declaration which was in the process of getting national and provincial government to promulgate the disaster.

The water crises in the metro worsened last week when the Kirkwood canal supplying water to the Nooitgedaght scheme collapsed cutting the Metro's water supply by 30%.

Mayoral commitee head for infrastructure, engineering, electricity and energy Annette Lovemore said the current water levels on all dams were sitting at 38.5% with Churchhill dam at 13.10%.

Lovemore said the Metro had also moved to emergency phase, part C, of water tariffs with additional consumption charged at R196.

She added that although households have been encouraged to use about 10-12 kl of water a month, there are instances in which some parties are using more than 200 kl of water a month.

Lovemore said the Metro has also lifted previous restriction exemptions provided to consumers adding that they will have to reapply.
