The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Council meeting scheduled to sit on Wednesday was postponed after newly elected Speaker, Gary van Niekerk, tested positive for Covid19.
The Speaker has now requested that all Mayoral Committee members, support staff, and anyone else gets tested for the virus.
He said while the Office of the Speaker understands the importance of the meeting and the items that would have served before it, the “safety of fellow Councillors, Municipal staff and their families is considered paramount and cannot be put at risk.”
"This is an important time for families to come together and reignite their family bonds, share compassion and support and celebrate the victories of the difficult year that was. It is important to prioritise their health and safety,” he said.
Van Niekerk called on residents to adhere to the strictest Covid19 protocols while appealing to the unvaccinated to get the jab.
He said all the venues that were to be used for today's Council meeting have been closed for decontamination and will reopen on Friday.
