Police in Gqeberha issued a warning to residents to be wary of bogus police officers who have been robbing homes in the Kabega Park policing area.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says two incidents were reported on Tuesday where men wearing police uniforms and bulletproof vests robbed homeowners in Sherwood and Kabega Park.
In the first incident around 10h30 on Tuesday, two men armed with a firearm confronted a woman in her dining room and ordered her to lie on the floor.
Colonel Naidu says her husband was then handcuffed and taken to a room where the robbers helped themselves to cash, jewellery, a cell phone, and a laptop, all with an estimated value of R54 000.
The complainant was assaulted with the firearm and a baton and the robbers fired a shot in the passage before fleeing in a white Hyundai i10. No one was injured.
Colonel Naidu reports that in the second incident on Tuesday night, a 36-year-old man was confronted in his home in Van der Stel Street in Kabega Park by two men wearing SAPS uniforms, bulletproof vests and SAPS face masks.
She says the complainant was assaulted and tied up with cable ties before the men fled with cell phones, jewellery, a laptop, and cash.
Colonel Naidu said police officers must produce their appointment certificates, which include a photograph, and that their name badges must also be displayed on their uniforms and bulletproof vests.
"As the festive season is upon us, criminals will use every 'trick' to gain access into your house," she warned.
