The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has set 2016 as the target date for the elimination of the housing backlog that currently stands at 71 411, according to a presentation by the National Department of Human Settlements to the National Assembly’s Human Settlements Committee.
This includes the upgrading of informal settlements, the acquiring of strategic land for human settlements and the development of human settlements with a full basket of services.
Among parcels of land being considered are the Walmer Country Club and part of Madiba Bay.
In its presentation, the National Department said Nelson Mandela Bay was planning to spend R585.6 million, which was marginally below the Division of Revenue Act allocation of R592.9 million.
It said of this, R165.9 million had been allocated for housing and land; R167.1 million for water services and R252.6 million for sanitation.
The department said the Metro aimed to achieve this through both greenfield and brownfield initiatives, while land for infill development had been identified in Fairview and Salisbury.
The Metro met its target of completing four in situ developments and one greenfield initiative in the last financial year.
The Metro’s Human Settlements Directorate is scheduled to provide a report of the provision of land for residents of Walmer at its meeting on Friday.
