Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Retief Odendaal on Sunday said over the last four days, the metro had seen three major electricity outages that have affected the city’s ability to transfer water into the metro.
The latest one being a substation that exploded in the Coega Industrial Development Zone on Saturday night.
In a Facebook post on Sunday morning, Odendaal said the power outages have had a serious effect on the metro’s ability to stabilise the system amidst constraints in supply - which simply can’t meet demand.
The Mayor also said it was rather disappointing that consumer behaviour was non-responsive to the water crisis facing the Municipality.
He said whilst there are many people who are doing their utmost in conserving our precious water resources, there are also those who remain irresponsible by refusing to change their water consumption lifestyle.
“We have therefore started to block water supply to some reservoirs in a bid to redirect water to zones that have been without water for days.
This will mean that different areas will start experiencing water outages which may last for up to a week,” Odendaal said in the post.
He said the following uses of municipal water are prohibited:
Fines of up to R5000.00 will be issued to anyone found to have contravened our restriction notices.
Should you have a reasonable suspicion that anyone is contravening our restriction notices please report them to waterleaks@mandelametro.gov.za or your local ward councillor office.
Odendaal said water tankers will be deployed to areas affected by the continued outages.
